When there was a rash of alleged drone sightings late last year, it prompted a lot of right-wing conspiracy-mongering. WorldNetDaily, of course, loves its right-wing conspiracy-mongering, so it enthusiastically joined in. Joe Kovacs promoted some higher-level conspiracy-mongering an a Dec. 11 article:
A U.S. congressman dropped a bombshell Wednesday concerning the source of mystery drones flying over New Jersey, saying they’re being launched from an Iranian “mother ship” off the eastern seaboard of the United States, a claim being denied by the Pentagon.
“From very high sources, very qualified sources, very responsible sources, I’m gonna tell you the real deal,” said U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J.
“Iran launched a mother ship probably about a month ago that contains these drones. That mother ship is off … the east coast of the United States of America. They’ve launched drones is everything that we can see or hear and again these are from high sources. I don’t say this lightly.”
Van Drew, a member of House Judiciary Committee, told Harris Faulkner of Fox News: “Iran made a deal with China to purchase drones, mother ships and technology in order to go forward. The sources I have are good. They can’t reveal who they are because they are speaking to me in confidentiality.
“These drones should be shot down whether it was some crazy hobbyist that we can’t imagine or whether it is Iran. I think it very possibly could be. They should be shot down. We are not getting the full deal and the military is on alert with this.”
Van Drew offered no evidence to back up his assertions or detailed the “very high sources, very qualified sources, very responsible sources” who supposedly backed him up. Indeed, a few days later, Van Drew retracted his claim about the drones coming from a Iranian “mothership” — something Kovacs and WND have yet to tell its readers. But who needs truth when conspiracy theories get clicks? So Kovacs was on to another one in a Dec. 15 article:
As the U.S. government remains coy about mysterious drones sighted over numerous states, there are new reports suggesting the devices are part of a massive counter-terror operation hunting for a dirty bomb or another possible weapon of mass destruction on American soil.
“It’s potentially the most significant national security threat we’ve faced since 9/11,” said Gary Franchi in his Raw Feed broadcast Saturday on the Next News Network.
“Apparently the Office of Global Access [a division of the CIA] has deployed these advanced surveillance assets for one purpose: hunting for a dirty bomb that’s believed to be hidden somewhere on U.S. soil.
“But here’s what should really keep you up at night. The reason the intel is leaking now, well, because time may be running out.”
“These are our drones,” Franchi stressed. “They are tracking gamma rays linked to possible WMDs in a massive counter-terror operation.”
Kovacs made no attempt to verify anything Franchi said.
The next day, Kovacs touted Donald Trump joining in the conspiracy-mongering:
President-elect Donald Trump said Monday “the government knows what is happening” concerning mysterious drones spotted flying over numerous states in recent weeks.
At a news conference from his Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Trump stated: “The government knows what is happening. Look, our military knows where they took off from.
“If it’s a garage, they can go right into that garage. They know where it came from and where it went. For some reason, they don’t want to comment.
“And I think they would be better off saying what it is. Our military knows and our president knows. For some reason, they want to keep people in suspense.
“I can’t imagine it’s the enemy because if it was the enemy they’d blast it out even if they were late, they’d blast it.
“Something strange is going on. For some reason they don’t want to tell the people and they should because the people are really – I mean they happen to be over Bedminster, [New Jersey]. They are very close to Bedminster. I think maybe I won’t spend the weekend in Bedminster. I’ve decided to cancel my trip.”
When asked if he had received an intelligence briefing on the drones, Trump replied: “I don’t want to comment.”
Kovacs couldn’t be bothered to fact-check Trump.
Bob Unruh joined in the conspiracy-mongering in a Dec. 27 article:
For weeks there’s been an epidemic of drone sightings over New York and New Jersey, without a definitive explanation available yet.
A variety of assumptions have been discussed, but none has yet relieved the concern Americans naturally have over such unexplained activities.
As WorldNetDaily indicated Dec. 15, there were reports suggesting the drones are part of a massive counter-terror operation hunting for a dirty bomb or another possible weapon of mass destruction on American soil.
“There have been reports of spikes and radiation in the New York metropolitan area,” Chang said in the report. “Two of them, one on each side of the Hudson. That leads to the conclusion that maybe they’re looking for an implanted nuclear weapon.”
It’s not the first time China has been linked to strange events across the U.S. In 2023 Chinese spy balloons crossed the United States at altitude, and according to the report it was “an apparent failure of the federal government,” both the military and the president, the protect the nation.
Now comes the drone mystery along with reports of radiation.
WND added to all this conspiracy-mongering with even more irresponsible conspiracy-mongering from outside sources:

Andy Schlafly made his own contribution in his Dec. 17 column:
As concern mounted over the wave of unidentified drones flying over populated areas of the Northeast, President Trump felt compelled to cancel his trip to his New Jersey home this weekend. Trump soberly declined to say whether he had received a classified security briefing about the drones, but pointed out that “The government knows what is happening. Our military knows, and our president knows, and for some reason they want to keep people in suspense.”
White House spokesman John Kirby is not disclosing the full story, obviously, as he’s already backed off his implausible assertion that most of the low-flying objects are really airplanes. He still insists, however, that hobbyists are behind many of these drones, which are too large, too sophisticated and flying too late at night to be from amateurs amusing themselves.
It appears likely that the numerous high-tech drones are searching for something from their low altitude of 400 feet and less. By flying only at night they must be using sensors that can detect substances on the ground in the dark.
After four years of an open border under Biden, it’s possible that a weapon of mass destruction has been smuggled into our country. But it’s more likely that this drone operation is another stunt by the Deep State to exert power over everyday Americans, and even Trump, under the false pretense of national security.
How does this conspiratorial saga end? Stay tuned.
