MRC Tries To Firefight Trump’s State Of The Union Address

Posted on May 4, 2026

The Media Research Center previewed President Trump’s state of the union address with grousing from Curtis Houck:

On Tuesday, ABC’s Good Morning America (GMA) and CBS Mornings combined to offer widely negative rhetoric in previewing President Trump’s State of the Union, painting it as an almost hapless endeavor amid “his lowest numbers yet” to change the minds of voters poised to trigger a blue tsuanmi in November.

Unsurprisingly, GMA was the most negative. In short, they were nothing like they were in 2024 ahead of Joe Biden’s final State of the Union as they heralded his plans to “tout his record” in a “critical moment” against a “rowdy” GOP.

This time, co-host and former Clinton official George Stephanopoulos framed it as having come at a time when Trump is “facing his lowest numbers yet” plus “challenging midterms and a possible war with Iran.”

[…]

CBS Mornings had just over 15 minutes of preview coverage, but it too was almost entirely negative.

Houck didn’t explain why he identifies Stephanopoulos as a “former Clinton official” despite the fact he hasn’t been one for close to three decades.

Nicholas Fondacaro joined the grousing with his daily hate-watch of “The View”:

Maybe ABC News should consider finding someone to replace moderator Whoopi Goldberg on The View. We know they won’t get rid of her the unhinged nonsense she spews, but maybe they’d act on her refusing to do the bare minimum required for the gig: keeping up-to-date on the current events they talk about. On Tuesday’s show, Goldberg announced that she wouldn’t be watching President Trump’s State of the Union later that night and only watch the news about it.

Knowing full well they were going to discuss the address on Wednesday’s show, Goldberg led into their preview discussion by boasted that she wasn’t going to watch. She instead was going to watch a cartoon show:

[…]

Her argument was a little ridiculous because us here at NewsBusters were in a similar position. Just because we watched and reported on The View, didn’t mean we individually were fans of the show, it just meant we covered it for work.

Thanks for confirming your watching of “The View” is merely a hate-watch, Nick.

After the speech, Fondacaro wrote:

Before President Trump had even exited the House chamber following his 2026 State of the Union address on Tuesday night, CBS News was already poohpoohing it by whining about Trump making Democrats look bad by oversimplifying complex issues like protecting criminal illegal immigrants over American citizens. They also continued the debunked lie that Democratic Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger was “very much a moderate.”

CBS chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett cautiously explained that Trump’s verbal battles with Democrats the whole night were indeed intended. He noted that Republicans wanted Americans to see the left as “crazy,” and Garrett had to defend himself using that term:

Fondacaro made no effort to disprove anything Garrett said — instead, he played whataboutism:

Contrast that with CBS New’s praise for President Biden’s address in 2024, when chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes proclaimed: “This seemed to me to be a speech designed first and foremost to show that Joe Biden has the stamina and the fire in the belly to go another four years.”

It turned out that the fire in the belly was just bad gas.

Jorge Bonilla went on to whine:

You would think that a veteran communications professional and former White House Press Secretary would show a modicum of respect when mentioning the various State of the Union honorees. Not if you are one Jennifer Rene Psaki, currently of MS NOW, “analyzing” President Donald Trump’s address.

Watch Psaki casually dismiss the honorees as circus entertainment and “unrelated vignettes:”

[…]

The “violence pornography” was a way of dismissing President Trump’s narration of the different episodes of horrific violence suffered by some of his honorees, and this was a recurring part of MS NOW’s coverage. These descriptions may seem out of line for a State of the Union address. So is the concept of widespread illegal alien violence.

Psaki’s blanket dismissal of the various acknowledgements and awards as circus entertainment displays an overall contempt for the honorees. First, there was the U.S. Men’s Hockey Team, who beat Canada for the gold medal and triggered a widespread media meltdown.

There was also Erika Kirk, whose husband was martyred in the name of free speech. There were the several victims of illegal alien crimes that were mentioned in the address. And then, there were the military heroes.

[…]

All of these were powerful moments during the address. Rather than quietly acknowledge them, Psaki chose to dismiss them. That, in itself, stands as its own State of the Union message.

Bonilla didn’t actually there was anything “powerful” about Trump doing shout-outs to various people to advance his agenda.
