Newsmax Offers Mostly Sycophantic Coverage of Trump State Of The Union

Posted on May 7, 2026

Newsmax’s coverage of President Trump’s state of the union address was largely about giving it the positive right-wing spin it was expected to offer as a Trump Regime Media outlet. John Gizzi kicked things off with some biased right-wing historians:

No sooner had President Donald Trump completed his State of the Union address Tuesday night than four much-respected historians offered Newsmax some provocative analysis of the 100-minute speech to Congress and the nation.

Some among the group gave the president strong criticism for the tone and content of his remarks.

But Trump also won high marks among some of those who chronicle American history for the first such address of his second term.

[…]

Irwin Gellman, now at work on the fourth volume on the life of Richard Nixon, said: “Trump could not have done much better than he did.”

Congressional Democrats, Gellman said, “could not have done more for Trump than they did when, while Republicans clapped, the Democrats just sat there and didn’t even applaud. This enhanced what he was doing, which was calling the Democrats nutty.”

Then came a wire article stating that “An estimated 32.6 million people watched President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address this week, down 4 million from his speech to Congress last year and the smallest audience he’s ever gotten for the annual message” — followed by an article touting how Newsmax did:

Newsmax announced Thursday that more than 4 million Americans tuned in across its channels for the network’s comprehensive live coverage of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night.

The coverage marks a major ratings and digital milestone for the company.

Newsmax’s coverage began at 6 p.m. Eastern with “Carl Higbie FRONTLINE” followed by “Rob Schmitt Tonight.”

The Newsmax audience was so large on cable that its total audience exceeded the combined viewership of Fox Business, CNBC, and NewsNation combined by 23%.

Newsmax’s chief contributed as well:

“The president gave an epic speech, and America tuned in, with a big chunk of his audience tuning into Newsmax,” said Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy. “It was a big night for the president and for us.”

With expanded distribution across cable, satellite, OTT, and streaming platforms, Newsmax continues to solidify its position as one of the nation’s leading news networks.

Millions of Americans are now watching Newsmax anytime, anywhere by downloading our free app on smartphones and TVs.

When Trump regurgitated all this, Newsmax wrote about that too:

President Donald Trump on Friday congratulated Newsmax for its high ratings showcasing his State of the Union address on Tuesday.

“Congrats to Newsmax. Big numbers! President DJT,” the president wrote in his Truth Social post.

Trump shared Newsmax’s report that more than 4 million viewers tuned in for live coverage of his speech.

Trump also posted to his Truth Social a link to Newsmax’s story on its high SOTU ratings that drew a cable audience exceeding the combined viewership of Fox Business, CNBC, and NewsNation by 23%.

No mention was made of the fact that Trump’s total audience dropped from the previous year.
