MRC Continued Its Complaints About Pride Month

Posted on August 8, 2025

For Pride Month, he Media Research Center did much more than cheer the renaming of a Navy ship named after Harvey Milk. Tim Graham raged in a scare quote-laden June 2 post:

It’s June, so it’s natural that PBS would kick off “Pride Month” by broadcasting a completely one-sided interview condemning Trump’s “horrific” actions directed at the T in LGBT. On PBS “News,” transgenderism is almost always celebrated and defended. Somehow, it’s not one side of an ideological battle. The Left thinks there’s just glorious LGBTQ orthodoxy, and there are hateful bigots who don’t deserve any air time.

Um, doesn’t Graham and the MRC run completely one-sided articles against LGBT people? Still, Graham continued to rant: “You can see that this year’s ‘Pride’ parades are anti-Trump, carrying banners saying ‘WE RESIST.’ There wasn’t even a sentence of opposition from Team Trump or anyone else opposed to the transgender agenda.”

Alex Christy played comedy op in a June 5 post:

CBS’s Stephen Colbert likes to portray himself as one of the country’s leading voices for the religious left, but Wednesday’s edition of The Late Show proved that most of that is just ordinary liberalism because Colbert attacked the Trump Administration for not issuing a Pride Month proclamation.

After attacking Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for ordering the renaming of USNS Harvey Milk, Colbert added, “This is shortsighted and long-stupidded and unsurprising. Since taking office, the Trump Administration has curtailed protections around LGBTQ rights, banned trans service members from the military, axed hundreds of millions in LGBTQ health funding, and now said they have no plans to issue a Pride Month proclamation this June.”

[…]

Colbert then questioned the administration’s humanity, “No Pride Month proclamation, which means the White House is less inclusive and has less humanity than the Buffalo Bills, who tweeted, ‘Happy Pride. Feeling all the Buffalove!’ Even they know! Even an NFL team knows. Even the Bills know love is love is Buffalove.”

The “Buffalove” portmanteau aside, there does not need to be a White House celebration of a movement whose current agenda items include the delegitimization of women’s sports, the idea that 3-year olds can know they are the “wrong gender,” or putting X-rated material in schools.

That last item linked to a 2023 post by the transphobic Tierin-Rose Mandelburg touting a child who was well-drilled on his parents’ right-wing talking points to attack the book.

The same day, Clay Waters continued Graham’s complaint that public broadcasting won’t hate LGBT people:

National Public Radio “breaking news” reporter Ayana Archie served up an example of  tax-funded public media once again going beyond traditional liberal media support for gay rights and going full throttle to throw unprofessional, anti-journalistic support to the entire alphabet movement (LGBTQIA….) in an article posted to NPR Thursday, “The LGBT community shows up for WorldPride in D.C., despite some worries about Trump.”

One might say that Waters is the unprofessional one for glibly dismissing people he doesn’t personally like as part of an “alphabet movement.”

Intern Lucas Escala was upset to learn that gay people have relatives too in a June 17 post:

During ABC’s Good Morning America Pride Month segment Tuesday, LGBT reporters Becky Worley, Robin Roberts, and Sam Champion spoke on the phenomenon that was “guncles.” Gay uncles. Everybody’s got one. You know that one uncle with the skin-tight white pants and the “roommate” that your mom told you not to ask any questions about at the family reunion? These days, people are celebrating him.

This new term, popularized by the internet in the last few years, was gaining traction as a way of shouting out gay uncles who played a positive role in their families’ lives. “If you are lucky enough to have a brother who wants to be in his niece or nephew’s lives,” Worley said, “there’s a good chance all of you will be fabulously enriched by this multigenerational relationship.”

If the criteria for being a “guncle” was just being a brother who wanted to be in his niece or nephew’s lives, it would seem there was no difference between him and his straight counterpart.

Luckily, one “guncle” interviewed during the segment clarified what it meant to be a gay uncle: “Being a “guncle” means being a protector, being a guy, guiding my nieces and nephews to being better human beings.”

Interestingly enough, these were all things that every uncle, regardless of orientation, does. So, since this also failed to clear anything up, you may be asking yourself what exactly makes a “guncle” special apart from his sexuality.

Escala closed by grousing:

“Guncles” are no different than all other uncles. Their sexuality should not and does not define them. What matters is maintaining a healthy, positive relationship with their families, and being gay has nothing to do with that. So instead of pushing an ideology through families, the media should encourage and highlight relationships with family members without attaching them to any movements.

Isn’t Escala pushing an anti-gay ideology by being so upset about “guncles”?
