WorlNetDaily’s Bob Unruh found a new state (other than his native Colorado) to rage about in an April 30 article:
Democrats in Minnesota state government, who have been bludgeoned with allegations of billions of dollars of social services fraud in the state’s Somali community, previously adopted a new state flag that has marked similarities, color, star design and more, to the Somali flag.
Now they want impose a state law that would punish local governments that refuse to endorse their agenda.
The design has been controversial since it was adopted, and in recent weeks many local governments have decided to return to the historic state flag.
A report at Fox explains how Democrats in the state now have proposed punishing, by withholding funds, cities and counties that don’t push the politicized new banner.
The original flag, dating to 1893, is a more traditional design with a seal image on it.
Already, Inver Grove Heights, Elk River, Champlin, Zumbrota and Plainview have returned to that emblem.
The new design is an eight-pointed star on a navy blue background next to a light blue field.
Unruh doesn’t really state what he considers wrong with the new flag. But the headline and various right-wing social media posts he includes in his article — inclulding one from Elon Musk in which he maliciously calls Minnestora Gov. Tim Walz “Traitor Tim” — make the issue more than clear: it allegedly looks too much like the flag of Somalia. Except it doesn’t, as a fact-checker detailed:
Minnesota resident Andrew Prekker’s submission to the SERC’s design contest inspired the final flag design. In an email, Prekker said his design drew inspiration from the state’s history and culture.
The SERC’s report shows the final design (page 18) and includes descriptions of the flag’s symbols (page 19).
The dark blue field is the shape of Minnesota, and the light blue field represents the significance of water to the state. The eight-point star represents the North Star, which is also the state motto “L’etoile Du Nord,” and is seen on the floor of the state Capitol’s Rotunda.
Cham said the new flag “exemplifies all the principles of good flag design.”
But Unruh has his mind made up, and facts won’t change his opinion, no matter how wrong it is.
