Tulsi Gabbard, the outgoing Director of National Intelligence for the administration of President Donald Trump, says the federal government pushed taxpayer money to some 120 biolabs around the globe.
According to an announcement from the ODNI, “These biolabs include labs in Ukraine, which may be at risk of compromise due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. For example, the Intelligence Community previously warned that a U.S.-funded biolab in Ukraine likely housed dangerous pathogens and remained vulnerable to longstanding threats of Russian attack, seizure, or damage.”
The announcement comes after months of hunting through Intelligence community records.
“Until now, evidence regarding the full existence and funding of these laboratories had been knowingly withheld from the American people. The information surrounding the existence, history, locations and funding of these U.S. funded biolabs has been intentionally covered up by powerful people falsely, claiming that they do not exist and accusing anyone who says otherwise to be foreign assets and traitors to America,” the statement explained.
“Many of these U.S. government-funded biolabs are currently or have previously engaged in research using hazardous and highly contagious pathogens, in some cases to include dangerous Gain-of-Function research, with very little visibility or oversight.”
Opposition to Gain of function activism has become an issue as more and more information is revealed about the COVID-19 pandemic, which killed millions of people around the globe and threw the U.S. economy into a freefall with inflation as high as 9% under Joe Biden.
Unruh didn’t mention that the pandemic actually started began under the presidency of Donald Trump, which makes his attempt to blame pandemic inflation on Biden (whom he refuses to acknowledge was the president) particularly laughable.
Unruh is also silent about the fact that this biolab narrative is a conspiracy theory, as well as Russian propaganda:
Gabbard’s disclosure sparked a fierce debate on social media, with MAGA supporters — including members of Congress — singing her praises and national security experts accusing her of pushing Russian propaganda. Putin claimed his Russian invasion of Ukraine was necessary in part to remove the biolabs, which he said make chemical weapons, from the country.
The Financial Times’s chief correspondent in Ukraine, Christopher Miller, shared the clip and added, “Before she departs, Gabbard uses her platform and access to intelligence to perpetuate one of her and Russia’s favorite conspiracy theories, disingenuously twisting facts, deliberately misinforming the public and delivering a gift to the Kremlin.”
[…]Rep. Mike Levin (D-CA) replied, “As far as I can tell, Tulsi’s big ‘secret biolab’ bombshell is recycled Kremlin propaganda. These labs were never secret. The U.S. spent decades funding biosafety and disease-surveillance work abroad under Nunn-Lugar, with the facility lists posted publicly by the State Department and our own embassy in Kyiv.”
“Russia invented the ‘secret bioweapons’ spin in 2022 to help justify invading Ukraine. Our own intelligence flagged it as disinformation. Now Tulsi is laundering that exact line, while conveniently forgetting the first Trump administration funded this same research. Nothing was hidden and the only thing being manufactured here is the coverup. Tulsi, don’t let the door hit you on the way out,” Levin concluded.
Rather than discuss those facts, Unruh stayed in Trump Regime Media mode, uncritically quoting Gabbard as staring “President Trump understands the serious threat dangerous Gain-of-Function research poses to the American people, which is why he took decisive action on May 25, 2025, signing EO 14292 to end federal funding of Gain-of-Function research around the world.”
WND has long peddled Russia’s biolab propaganda. It has also regularly praised Gabbard — a May 22 article by Unruh claimed that she “has served diligently as President Donald Trump’s Director of National Intelligence” in noting she was leaving at the end of June to care for her husband, who has cancer.
Newsmax was similarly evasive on the facts behind Gabbard’s biolab declaration.
